Message from the Chief Justice

Welcome to Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal.

The Court hears appeals from the Federal Court and the Tax Court of Canada as well as statutory appeals, and provides judicial oversight of numerous federal tribunals and bodies. From intellectual property to Indigenous rights, from natural resources to national security, and from the environment to the regulation of information and privacy, and more, the Court decides cases in areas of law that touch on the core of Canadian life.

The Court hears and decides cases across the country, in both official languages. It plays a key role in the development of a coherent body of law across Canada while ensuring uniformity and consistency in the application of federal laws. The Court is proud of its ongoing contributions to Canada’s unique bilingual and bijural legal system, which ensures that all Canadians, wherever they reside, can be heard and understood in the official language of their choice by judges who are familiar with the common law and the civil law.

This website has been designed to provide you with information about the Court and its work, including:

We are proud to offer virtual viewing of our hearings. The Court is open to the public and welcomes all to come see, first-hand, Canada’s legal system at work.

We hope you find this website informative.

Yves de Montigny, Chief Justice
